Data Concentration Unit (DCU):

 

u      Function

The Data Concentration Unit (DCU) is designed to reduce the complexity and the amount of data collection tasks at the Central Station (CS) by acting as an intermediate data collection point.

The DCU collects the meter reading data from or via the Meter Interface Unit (MIU) or Acquisition Terminal Unit (ATU) and stores it for batch retrieval by the CS. This way, instead of communicating with each meter. The Central Station can just obtain the data from a much fewer number of DCUs. This method of concentrating the data before CS retrieval is especially useful when the number of meters become large.

 

u      Operating Principle

A DCU can connect with up to maximum 1,000 meters. The data/status stored in each MIU or ATU is retrieved through various local communication network, I.e. Power Line Carrier (PLC) or Hardwire bus (M-bus).

When a meter is installed, its initial settings (parameters) are programmed to MIU or ATU by a Handheld Unit (HHU).

The same information is transferred into the DCU by infrared port of the HHU or via remote data download from the CS. All new meters are automatically added to the call list for cyclic polling.

At each polling, the current reading together with the meter/MIU/ATU status is retrieved and stored in the DCU.

All data in DCU is stored in non-volatile memory (EEPROM) that will not be affected by power loss. The DCU also comes with a backup battery to support real time clock operation in case of power loss.

The standard DCU comes with an on-board PSTN modem and surge protection device. Depending on user requirements, DCU can be configured with GPRS/GSM modem if wireless communication with CS is desired.
